Formed in 1987 as P&O European Ferries following P&O's purchase of European Ferries operating as Townsend Thoresen from Portsmouth, Dover and Felixstowe. In 1996 services from Felixstowe were transferred to P&O North Sea Ferries. In 1998 operations at Dover were merged with those of Stena Line to form the joint venture P&O Stena Line. P&O acquired Stena Line's share in P&OSL in 2002 and merged them with P&O European Ferries in Portsmouth and P&O North Sea Ferries to form P&O Ferries in 2003. Following the take over of P&O's ferry and port operations by DP World in 2006, P&O Irish Sea was absorbed in 2010.
