Founded in 1897 with Vickers &s Sons purchase of the Barrow Shipbuilding Company. Became Vickers-Armstrong (Shipbuilding) in 1927 after merging with Armstrong Whitworth and renamed Vickers Shipbuilding in 1968. In common with other British yards, the company was nationalised as part of British Shipbuilders in 1977. Subsequently re-privatised in 1986 as Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Limited (VSEL). Acquired by GEC Marconi in 1995 and on Marconi's sale in 1999 to British Aerospace became BAE Systems Submarines, and BAE Systems Submarine Solutions in 2007.
