Formed in 1955 by the merger of Ateliers et Chantiers de la Loire and Chantiers de Penhoët. Acquired by Alstom in 1976, subsequenly passing to Aker Yards when Aker Group acquired Alstom Marine in 2006 and subsequently part of STX Europe following the take over of Aker Yards by STX Corporation in 2008. Following the bankruptcy of STX in 2016 an agreement was reached in 2016 for Fincantieri to acquire a 50% stake in STX France with the remainder being held by the French Naval Group and the French government.
